A
documentary that follows six young dancers from around the world as
they prepare for the Youth America Grand Prix, one of the most
prestigious ballet competition's in the world.
Director: Bess Kargman
Stars: Aran Bell, Gaya Bommer Yemini and Michaela Deprince
Just as Spellbound
certified that spelling bees are akin to gladiatorial combat, Bess
Kargman's documentary proves the point that ballet is not for the faint
of heart. Every year, 300 exemplary young dancers emerge from fiercely
contested preliminary rounds to compete in the prestigious Youth America
Grand Prix: the one ballet competition that can legitimately change a
dancer's life. Kargman nimbly tracks six diverse youths (they run the
gamut from a pretty-in-pink, all-American young girl to a Senegalese
refugee whose parents were slaughtered) as they vie to join the elite
.1% of dancers who sign on with a professional company.
